Well, today has been quite eventful. This morning I finally discovered why histograms are useful, and have been using them to evaluate my pictures all day.

This histogram review mode on my camera is quite useful actually... if you have any huge peaks to the extreme edges then you've most likely lost your shadows or blown out your highlights. If there is significantly more graphage on one side or the other, then the picture is very light or dark... this could be what you're aiming for, but its handy for judging the actual exposure of photos because the screens aren't that reliable, especially in sunlight. If there are gaps between the histogram graph and the sides of the histogram then you can squish the dynamics in photoshop to get a more saturated lighter/darker/more pleasing picture.

Another great feature of the histogram review mode is that although the image is smaller (you can see it full-size by pressing zoom), it will flash with some parts white - these are the parts that are overexposed. This is hugely useful to me.
