Sitticus fasciger Jumping Spider

    Newer Older

First of all, I apologize for the blown orange hairs, I had to salvage this image from a pretty underexposed photo.

Found this little one (~3-4mm) on an outside window sill. I'm not at all familiar with this genus, and at the time of writing this, I don't know the species or even the gender. A nice looking spider, the colorations and patterns of scales are great. The palps have some interesting hairs as well.

Taken at ~7:1 with the 28mm reversed to the bellows at f/5.6.

EDIT (11/6/08): I contacted Wayne Maddison about this spider, as I couldn't find an entry for it on bugguide.net. He identified it as a female Sitticus fasciger.

For an interesting paper on this species, see here.

Pretty exciting stuff, this is a whole new genus for me, and an interesting spider as well. Looks as though they first came to the US in the late 1950's.

Wow, Amazing portrait Thomas! I pretty positive just found a juvenile of this species yesterday. I found the ID through bugguide.net, the history through wikipedia, and while looking for more proof I found this photo of yours. Hope you don't mind but I used the link you shared of the paper. I hope one day to get shots like this one!
