Black Soldier Fly Head - (Hermetia illucens)
While swimming this morning, I spotted this guy flailing about in the pool. Upon closer inspection, I noticed the beautiful compound eyes. I found an empty gatorade bottle and scooped him up. While packing up to head back, I noticed an adult male Platycryptus undatus jumping spider that looked a little different than what I'm used to, so I let him ride on my hand as I rode my bike back.
I went inside, got my camera, and when I came back out, there was a great looking tiger moth (from the genus Grammia ) on the outside wall. So, with all the great bugs available, I ended up having to let the jumping spider go in order to photograph this fly.
The fly stuck around for a few photos before flying off. This photo is a manual focus stack of 3 photos taken at ~4:1/5:1 and at f/8 with the 28mm reversed on some extension tubes.
The patterns, iridescent qualities, colors, and the compound eyes as a whole are just amazing. I wish the lighting was a little bit better (this was salvaged from some severely underexposed photos) but he flew away before I had a chance to take any more photos.
