Portrait of a Palestinian girl: Lana

Lana is originally from Ghaza, yet she lived quite a while in London. She's my colleague and close friend.

We decided to set up a studio session of portraits yet they would carry some sort of message or identity behind them - a socio-political one and this came up.

I was actually planning for such shot ever since January but I got the chance to do it now. Hope you like it, strobe is umbrella up ahead.

this photograph is not sought out to send an extreme political message, and yes I do realise the amount of people suffering and struggling in Palestine; it's not so pleasant and we're not happy with it. This photograph on the other hand does not in any way depict the Palestinian struggle in Palestine under Israel's brutal attacks, it focuses on an issue that is more Social. So you're completely correct.

It's a portrait of a girl, and I did not wish to just take a portrait of her but rather wearing the Palestinian scarf which is extremely misused nowadays by people who wear it and don't understand what it represents. It's a portrait of a girl, a human being, just like you and I yet she's trying to prove that as much as she lived in the UK she is still loyal and maintains her identity as a Palestinian.

The photo brings nothing to Palestine, but it sure sheds a light of clarification of who is this scarf worn by originally, and just represents Palestinian who are living abroad (not in Palestine) as ones that do not discard their identity in any sense.

Some people wish to concentrate more on the technical aspects (e.g. lights, contrast..etc) to this photograph rather that what it was intended to show, and I chose to give full freedom for people to voice themselves through comments whether they wish to comment on the technical details or what's behind it; and it's the same in your case.

I hope you understand my point of view, as I said earlier it's a "socio-political" message about Palestinian expatriates living in countries overseas such as UK, US or wherever. Those who tend to face identity-crisis as much as they have huge affection to their home countries and identity yet being brought up abroad can cause a sense of struggle for them.

Finally, I apologise if you find it offensive or doesn't quite satisfy your taste, but I really hope you re-look at it from my perspective. And I would like to note I never intended for it to get that much attention (not that i'm not happy with it, of course I am) and I also haven't made 1 penny out of it. Thanks for your comment.

Well Fatimah to tell you the truth I was actually fuming when I read the comment but I was trying to be as cool as collected as possible. Exactly, that is what I was trying to convey that beyond the political suffering the Palestinians are going through there's a humanitarian identity to shed a light on!

Thanks for your reply Fatimah, you definitely voiced the furious bit in me but I refused to say it out as i'm in a quite a difficult position and might sound overly stuck up not to accept any sort of feedback.
