Night shot of Tower Bridge in London. Tower Bridge opened in 1894, the combined suspension and draw bridge had taken 8 yrs to build and was seen as an engineering marvel of her time. The architect Sir Horace Jones and engineer Sir John Wolfe Barry had submitted the winning design and construction started however after Jones died in 1887 George D Stevenson took over the project and the plans were changed to give the bridge a more Gothic, ornate facade which would help it blend in with the nearby Tower Of London. The plans now consisted of two central towers each standing at 213ft and clad in Portland Stone and Cornish Granite.
Tower Bridge was officially opened on 30 June 1894 by The Prince of Wales (the future King Edward VII), and his wife, The Princess of Wales (Alexandra of Denmark).
The need for a new bridge had risen due to the increased development of East London during the Victorian period, and with so many tall mast ships sailing up the Thames a tradtional fixed bridge design could not be used.
The bridge is Grade 1 Listed.
