Rainbow (for deleteme group)

Rainbow (for deleteme group) by Olivia Leigh.
I really hate when my yuppie friends from NoVa insist on how superior it is in the burbs. Look at this! Columbia Heights is architecturally gorgeous.

Good viewed large.

I was so excited when I saw the rainbow over C-heights! And then I was angry when I realized that I didn't have my camera on me. Thanks for the beautiful shot!

seems to me you have two rainbows going on.
the one in the sky and another one with those colorful buildings.

:) Indeed. Actually, if you look closely above the top one, there is a second (real) rainbow. It had started to fade by the time I took this, but you can still see a bit of it.

I would crop out the cars at the bottom which are distracting and colorless. I also think the second rainbow is not worth the real estate. Yes, it's a cool phenomenon, but it isn't a big part of this photo.

I am going to withhold a vote right now. I think this might be a saveme with some work. The light on the buildings is quite good and the sense of scale is very nice.

I like the clearness of this photo, also without the crop it seems nice to me.

a lot of extra stuff on the left side; rainbow kind of faint.

now that i read zoe´s comment, i´m going to say you can´t take a rainbow picture and have it not be of a rainbow.

Yes m'am. I always tote around my little point and shoot digital, though I sometimes feel inhibited using it around the neighborhood. Moments like this, however, are worth a little unease.

I like it! To me the second, double rainbow would be a very important part of the picture, but that might be because I like therainbow group a lot ;-)

A second rainbow IS faint, and sometimes undiscernable in life, so the croppers are asking for a comic-book unreality. voted "saveme" in Delete Me!

Rainbows are surprisingly hard to make effective photos for some reason. I've given up, but this one is much better than anyof mine.

No. It's pretty good, but not a great photo. It is hard to make rainbow shots effective, eventhough we're so tempted to photograph them as soon as they pop up. As this one is much better than any of mine, all of mine are complete garbage so it isn't really saying much. Is that more clear?

Drift Words  Pro User  says:

Only slightly. You seemed to be saying that you've given up so you don't see why anyone else shouldn't also. I think this captures the weird luminosity of a rainbow very well, as well as the evanescence of the second bow.

dooda  Pro User  says:

No you're reading into it too much. If you can catch a great rainbow shot, somehow infuse it into a composition so that it blows my pants off, I'd love that and admire it, as I admire this photo. However I don't find the second bow evanescent at all, it's barely visable, and the primary rainbow is luminous as rainbows generally are obliged. One problem with rainbow pictures is that they are so flat. As everything else in the pictures has depth, the rainbow is this flat arc that you have no control over it's placement or perspective in the photo. This is why I have given up, and why yours doesn't make me jivetalk. I don't think it's impossible, but difficult. Please don't give up if you like taking them, but for me it's not worth it. Then again I'm always taking shots at night so that explains a little. Sorry this was so long.

It *is* evanescent, so there! It's barely visible image is exactly what you need, given that photos don't do time, for an evanescent thing, being:

"Lasting or existing only for a short time: ephemeral, fleet, fleeting, fugacious, fugitive, momentary, passing, short-lived, temporal, temporary, transient, transitory."

Rock on Olivia!

I looked at the crops and they weren't as good. All these crop-merchants must be being charged by the pixel for using the net or something. If anything, I'd prefer a) all the cars, but mostly b) a bigger sky. Something like +10% on the bottom, +25% on the top and a bit out to the left if liked.

I just think I should clarify this photo some...I knew the rainbow would probably look like shite. It was pretty faint at the time, and yes, the second one was barely visible. My main point with this photo wasn't to take an amazing photo of a rainbow. There was no amazing rainbow of which to take a picture of. Honestly, the buildings looked the most gorgeous, or rather, the light on top of the buildings. The rainbow was just a sort of added bonus, that I felt should be included since, while it wasn't an amazing one, still is something of a rarity.

I appreciate critiques, but at the same time, I feel like many people were criticizing my photo for not being "an amazing rainbow shot." That was never the intention.

It looks like some kind of fantasy land with the light quality on the buildings. Cropped closer like StuartMoulder suggested would make it perfect. That puff of clouds behind the buildings is the cherry on top. Nice

Very nice. It's really hard to get a shot of patterns in DC without the telephone poles/streetlights/anything else interfering.

I love DC for the great rainstorms that end at seven p.m.
