Normally this place is crowded with tourists and locals plying their trade. But in the spring of 2006 the city was in a state of siege. What few tourists that remained took refuge in the courtyard cafes behind closed shutters.

View from my hotel

I took a room in a hotel with a view onto the street so that I could see when a curfew was in force and I had to stay in and watch the news on BBC world service and CNN.

All the usually busy shops were shut, curfews prevented tours of the city and exploring the valley was impossible.

I went to Durbar Square during a curfew (they weren't shooting tourists), it was almost completely deserted.
