This area received higher than average rainfall over two years prior to 2001 and farmers were optimistic, but this pattern reversed and in 2002 it received only 57mm of rain. Farmers struggled to maintain some vegetation to protect their topsoil, but as in the case of this paddock, many lost all their topsoil to the wind.
