Dr. Robert C. Maxson

Dr. Robert C. Maxson is in his tenth year as President of California State University, Long Beach. President Maxson earned his doctorate from Mississippi State University in 1970, and he has written two college textbooks which together have been adopted in approximately 100 universities. He is married to Dr. Sylvia Parrish Maxson. Their son Todd is a pediatric surgeon in Dallas, and their daughter Kimberly is a lawyer and lives in Nevada.

When President Maxson came to campus he outlined his vision for the institution. He then asked the University and the community to support that vision. Dr. Maxson has turned his vision into reality.

The 35,000-student university, which is the second largest in the state, has been transformed, changed forever. With President Maxson's strong leadership, here is just a taste of the accomplishments:

1. The President's Scholars Program has been established. This year approximately 370 California high school valedictorians and National Merit scholars are attending classes at Cal State Long Beach.

2. Bright young professors from the best graduate schools in the country are accepting faculty and research positions at Cal State Long Beach.

3. Cal State Long Beach has raised over $150 million in private funding the past six years.

President Maxson is a man of principle, direction and strength. His message has been straightforward and consistent, one that has been clearly heard and understood. He has been named President of the Year the past four consecutive years by the students of the 23 campus California State University System.
