Frost Bites
![]() I was looking for the english names to designate a local big bird that we used to call Ema, and I have found this story in wikipedia:
A small population of the American Rhea has become established in Germany. Three pairs escaped from a farm in Groß Groenau in August 2000. These birds survived the winter and succeeded in breeding in habitat similar to that of their South American one. They later crossed the Wakenitz river and founded a colony in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in the area between Schattin, Utrecht and Rieps. Rheas have also been sighted in nearby areas, and some estimate the population to be around 200 birds. As a wild-living bird, they are legally protected in Germany in a similar way to native species. CommentsBlack Dust a.k.a. odonbd says:@stewpic: Hi, Stewart. Transplanting menaced species
could be a way to save it, mainly if the
environment is poor, with only a few native
species that do not run for the same natural
resources. In this case, even by accident.

An interesting story, maybe the Rhea would survive in South England as the climate is not so severe in the winter as it used to be.
