Oleander Hawk Moth (Daphnis nerii)

This female was bred in captivity - but from ova collected in the wild under licence from Rhodes, Greece.
This is my all-time favourite moth species; the colours are truly spectacular and particularly when pristine as in this freshly emerged individual. To give an idea of scale, she has a 90mm [nearly 4"] wing span!!

Yes it is a fantastic picture, but the species is a stunning reminder why it is so important to undertake enivronmental efforts everywhere even in our own backyard. And Greece is suffering terribly from the effects of climate change. I hope the moth doesn't go extinct, at least for a couple more years.

      Beautiful! and so Different, too.

A lot of the moths where I live are just plain brown-speckly for camouflage -this has colouration more like what I'd expect from a butterfly.
