Iconaster longimanus

I've only seen this seastar on one out of about 600 dives I've done so far. The photo was taken in the Philippines in February 2007

Perfect shot mate, water clarity must have been decent.

Holy carpe diem! What a spectacular starfish, and a stunning capture, too. Very sharp, clean, crisp image, nicely composed. Great work!

Thanks for all the comments! It's definitely not a fake - and it was alive. I finally managed to identify it. Its scientific name is Iconaster longimanus. Apparently it comes in a variety of colours.

funny i came across something similar in the philippines just 2 wks ago off southern cebu and was thinking of this picture. wasnt as striking as this specimen though. i wonder if this is a juvenile?

    13. Divaholic 32 months ago | reply

I don't think it is a juvenile. It seemed fully grown, and I've since seen photos in a big field guide on marine invertebrates that look identical, except for colour variations.

I actually just got 4 of these in my store (www.tntsaltwateraquariums.com) for the first time in 17 years of doing business, and it's the first time in 27 years of being in the hobby that I have seen these in person... They are truly amazing looking starfish and from my research and observations they are completely reef safe seeming to feed only on filamentous and encrusting algae....Truly amazing and a great addition to any reef setup...
