Bloody hell you stayed right in it. There was no way I was getting that close, a 1200mm lens would have been needed where I was.

It really was more a case of the riot starting around me. One minute I was photographing a few rowdies the next I’m in the middle of a medieval battle.

I was up at the Savoy from the start, but when bricks and fireworks started heading in my general direction I decided it was time to retreat.

Glaa you got out safely, you got some great shots to remember the day by, not that you are likely to forget it in a hurry anyway.

That's amazing work for a non pro. I know a couple of long- standing photojournalists and someone was saying to me that it must be hard on them now that digital photography has opened up the potential to a much wider pool. No say I - you can always tell the work of an amateur from a pro journalist.

Now I'm not so sure..

I agree Hindolbittern and made a similar comment elsewhere. The coverage by flickr members on Saturday was unreal. If I was a newspaper photographer, I think I'd start looking into fashion or product shots! Also check out the notes on the photo for where the professionals were. They were behind the riot police!

Great work, if a little risky!

Interesting how the lad wearing the tricolour is trying to brain a Gardi for protecting Protestants. Doesn't he know the flag is supposed to represent peace between the 2 traditions ...

Ah! At first I didn't see the green guy at the back.

I think the significance of orange on the flag is an intellectual nuance that is lost on the rioters. Consider the absurdity of a “republican” protesting against a pro-British march while cowering behind an Aston-Villa scarf.

In my view, most of the ones doing the throwing are just thugs getting high on adrenaline.
