More rays visible as Large 'rays' On Black

"California State Parks invites the public to attend the 134th anniversary celebration of Pigeon Point Light Station State Historic Park on November 18. The event will take place from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. with the lighting itself taking place from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m.

As part of the celebration, State Parks, along with assistance from the United States Coast Guard, will be relighting the original 8,000-pound first order Fresnel lens. This event is attended by hundreds of visitors each year, with many photographers hoping to capture that magic moment when the lens is lit and beams of light radiate around the top the 115 foot tall lighthouse. The anniversary celebration is sponsored by the San Mateo Coast Natural History Association, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting interpretive and educational programs in the State Parks of the San Mateo Coast. "

@Jack - this is how it looked. In fact the scene in person is even more impressive. If the exposure is pushed a little more you'll see about 20% more rays. The Fresnel optics in the original lens are just awesome - this sight blew me away.

@Roger - there's absolutely no effect applied to the light. As noted above the rays of light are formed by the original Fresnel lens installed in the light house and the sight is even more impressive in person. If anyone is ever around Pigeon Point in November and you like light, you MUST get out to see this in person.

@alexindigo - there is no effect applied in case you were saying that. This is totally as seen on the night, the Fresnel lens in the lighthouse focuses the light in this way, which I agree - is a very nice effect!

Thanks for the tip off Andy. This one or others from that night have been used in various places. One even appeared in a local Chinese newspaper (Friday's Sing Tao Daily, Page F2) to promote this years event, which unfortunately was blotted out by heavy fog which closed in in the last hour before they were due to light the lens.

Seriously now - this is how the lighthouse looks on this special night every November. The original lamp is lit and the Fresnel lens on the lighthouse creates the starbust effect - you see it this way with your naked eye - no filters/processing involved.
