Lower Elwha Transfers Coho Salmon November 2011 |
The Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, in
partnership with Olympic National Park
and Washington Department of Fish and
Wildlife, did the first transfer of coho
salmon from the tribe's new hatchery to
the Elwha River. The tribe hopes to
release 600 coho into the river above
the Elwha Dam, the first time salmon
have been in that area since the river's
dams were installed nearly 100 years
ago. The tribe outfitted the fish with
identification tags and radio tags so
they can track where the fish end up in
the river.
