This Is My Rifle

This Is My Rifle by nukeit1.
This was my issued weapon during my combat tour in Iraq; a M-16 with a M203 grenade launcher. I have attached, on top, a night vision scope which really was horrible to use and made the weapon too heavy. I also have a EOTech attached on top of the handguards. That was the best piece of gear I had for my weapon and made it a lot easier to sight in on targets. I also have a flashlight attached on the side of the handguards.

It's interesting to note that the M-16 series was designed as a lightweight rifle. How much do you suppose yours weighed with all of the accessories, and how much freedom did each Marine have to equip his rifle as he pleased?

The new A4's actually weigh a little bit more than the A2's. So, starting off at about 8 lbs, add 2 lbs for the magazines I have on it, the flashlight weighed about .5 lbs, and the M203 grenade launcher weighs 3 lbs. As for the EOTech, it weighed very little and my night vision scope on top was only put on at night and eventually never put back on because it was horrible to use.

As for the amount of freedom we had to equip or rifles, we could pretty much do whatever we wanted to it as long as we didn't take it apart ourselves for some of the options. Rather, our command wanted us to take it to the armorer. We had guys add bipods, their own optics, and even their own pistol grips.

Thats one sick rifle. Although how easy would it be drawing a mag out of the pouch on the stock? Especially if it was shouldered. Those upside down Blackhawk MOLLE pouches would sure get it done right on your rig though. Btw, what's your MOS?

That stock magazine pouch is mainly so we always have at least 1 mag of ammo with us at all times like when walking around a base.

Amen. Thats awful brave of you to sit here and decry our armed forces via the anonymous internet, I'd love to see you stand up in front of a United States Marine, Airman, Soldier, Sailor, or Coastguardsman and say the same. Some of us are studying hard to go TO Iraq, (and probably in the coming years Asia) to defend the freedom of people like you. Don't take it for granted. If you don't feel like stading behind our men and women in uniform, feel free to stand in front of them.
