Lightning in Bayville, NJ

Lightning in Bayville, NJ by nouQraz.
Bayville, New Jersey

A nice big bolt of lightning over the bay.

Melissa (mbrinamen) had the smart idea to use my 10.5mm Fisheye lens... Makes it easier to catch the lighting when the camera gets *everything* that is in front of it!

Beautiful! Would you consider posting it to the 1-2-3 NJ group? (NJ 1-2-3 group has a limit of 1 image per person per day.)

Was it luckt timing, or a open shutter and small aperture? I used to do this with film all of the time, but have assumed that the digital sensor would get saturated in a long exposure. I just got a used D70 and have been doing lots of learning in the last few days. Cheers!

@46 Willys: I was shooting 2 second exposures @ f/10, with the camera set to ISO 400. (the ISO 400 was because that was what I had used last and i forgot to check it). I was basically just firing the camera repeatedly every 2 seconds hoping for lightning. I didn't want to go super long exposure because (before the power went out) there was a decent amount of light from other houses so I didn't want to have the foreground washed out.

Took over 300 shots... got around 10 or 15 that actually had any lightning in them, and the 3 here on flickr were the ones with "good" lightning in them.

Ah the beauties of not having to buy film!

i like the atmosphere very much, it has something really frightening.

i think you will have a more chance of getting hit by a lighting than getting that shot... Awesome shot!
