The Walkman Professional WM-D6C is a great machine. Dolby C, quartz-controlled speed, mic and line inputs. Rumor has it the thing was built so Sony chairman Akio Morita could record surreptitiously in opera halls. The WM-D6C has been used for radio production and even some recordings (certainly Michelle Shocked's "Texas Campfire Tapes").
I've used this Sony Walkman image as part of an evolution of music players collage while discussing the newest music players, the MP3 players. You can see it here: The iPod Touch: A Guide for Parents and Grandparents. Thank you for allowing the use of this image through Creative Commons.

Nice post. I'm still using the $5 mp3 player I bought at a garage sale (not an iPod, of course).
