Rainbow over the Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone

Paintings by Edward Hopper entice visitors to the American Experience, introductory galleries on the first floor. These galleries display artworks, from across three centuries, which convey a sense of place and the defining role of land in the American imagination. Nineteenth century paintings by artists such as William Merritt Chase, Jasper Francis Cropsey, Robert S. Duncanson, Winslow Homer, George Inness and Thomas Moran depict various landscapes from across the United States, while the twentieth-century paintings and sculptures by Hans Hoffman, Isamu Noguchi, Georgia OKeeffe, Martin Puryear and Wayne Thiebaud, among others, convey ideas about land and nature.
