Wood Lane Station 01310042b

Wood Lane Station 01310042b by normko.
Wood Lane underground station. Demolished to make way the new bus station that will be part of the White City development. Gone and forgotten or is that Craig David I'm thinking of?

There's a very good illustrated history of the station by Hywel Williams here

I couldn't believe they knocked this down. Should have made it a feature in the new build.

They did dismantle it carefully to rebuild it at the London Transport Museum in Acton. But, since the new station is going to be called "Wood Lane" , they could have rebuilt it down the road a few yards and saved some cash.

I used to pass this one quite often. The photo is only of half of it. The bit to the left used to be a bridge then beyond that there was another entrance like this. So it was quite a big frontage. Sad to lose it.

Thank you Nicole. I took several photos of the station that morning, some closer, some different angles but I ended up with the straight in front shot. The little bit of snow adds to the bleakness.

It was one of those local landmarks that, in the end, wasn't valued. OK it will be rebuilt in a museum but Wood Lane is the poorer. Another link with the past has gone - but we'll be able to get a good espresso in the new shopping centre. So it goes.

Skinny Blueberry Frappucino is not a favorite of mine so I may have to take my own if that's the case. Meanwhile I shall pray for something with a more Italian pedigree. A branch of Bar Italia would be good - I'll start the campaign right away.

Quite agree. Sad to see a bit of the area's history disappear. Even if it's preserved in a museum, Shepherd's Bush has lost a link with the past.

The current developers haven't even had the courtesy to retain the White City name for the development. They call it Westfield London, with no acknowledgement of its locality or the local community.

Hello - you'll be pleased to know that restoration of the pediment, with the roundel, is actually underway by LU - we're hoping to have the roundel back in Wood Lane station in 2009 - and looking to have the full pediment back at sometime in the future.

That's good news Mike. You mean that whole frontage is actually coming back to Wood Lane?

We (the LTM and LU - although LU are now running the project) had intended to keep an entire door portal - but after much consideration we decided that the pediment, with the inset glass mosaic roundel, was a better option. So up in Shropshire work is on-going on the faience and mosaic - I'm hopeful that the first phase, the restored and mounted roundel, will be back sometime during this summer in the new Wood Lane - and that, in time, we can reconstruct the whole pediment as the faience will have been conserved. One thing I had forgotten over the years - the sheer size of the object which is why it has been slimmed down.

I look forward to seeing it back at least in part. There's virtually no physical trace left on site to connect with the exhibitions and the stations that served it.
