St Mary, Halesworth, Suffolk

A big urban church in the middle of this lovely little town. Considerably restored, but not without interest.

Andrew Johnston of the Royal Flying Corps, killed in Flanders 30th October 1917. he was twenty years old. Part of his propeller that day has been fashioned into a cross below. He was buried in Donzinghem Military Cemetery in Belgium. Curiously, his name is misspelt on the propeller.

The propellor could be from his original grave. The four-bladed prop implies an SE 5, DH 4 or DH9 aeroplane.

Strangely this one is unlisted at the Commonwealth War Graves Commission. I was unable to trace the name or the date of death for anyone of that rank or in those services.
