The Harrowing of Hell
St Ethelbert, Hessett, Suffolk
A medieval church of outstanding interest lost in the lanes between Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket.
The collection of medieval glass is one of the best in the county, albeit very dirty, and difficult to photograph on this sunny day. The subjects include the Life of Christ, the Holy Kinship, and images of Saints.
There are 14th and early 15th century wall paintings, including St Barbara, St Christopher, St John the Baptist, and part of an Annunciation scene. On the north wall are the Seven Deadly Sins, and a Christ of the Trades image.
The church also has fine 15th century roodscreen, roof, and font with a dedicatory inscription. Uniquely in England, it also retained the burse and pyx cloth from medieval days. But these last two are now in the British Museum.
