Run, Pepper, Run!

The leash, for anybody who missed it (hard to see in the smaller version). This and the fully-aloft Pepper made this beat out quite a few other outtakes taken by pointing my camera behind me as we all ran up the hill. -/\/
SUCH a cute face!
Excelente captura....!!!!!
yupiiiiiiiiiiii =)
Run, Pepper, Run! by Norby.
Forgot to add a description - this was taken on our way back from playing in the Pecos River out at N's grandparents' land. Pepper is (as you may have already noticed) quite wet, and quite muddy. Her front paws are normally completely white, not brown :)

Thanks for all the kind comments - I knew using ISO 400 all the time would pay off some day (re: freezing the action). :)

Breno: I'd love to have - will you send me a guide on mid-air posing some day?

dairycow2: Thank you - I'm really sad that I wasn't able to scrape up an extra 8x12 matte for submitting this to the county fair this year, so I had to squeeze it down to 8x10 - I really do think the sky caps if off nicely.

A cute shot, well-captured moment. I like the fact that you can see the lead curving towards the boy and that the boy is wearing a bright colour - if he were wearing a dark colour it wouldn't work so well, the picture would be too grey. I'm not awfully happy about the sky but the rest of the photo means I don't really care...

I'm sure I've seen this picture before somewhere...

ach, enough rambling...

I hate you. That puppy is so adorably cute and happy that my brain just melted. I wish I knew how you'd frozen the action so well. Actually, I wish I had more than a point and shoot, but since I'm geeky, I'd like to know how you caught it *while running*. The camera must've been shaking like crazy.
Posted 52 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Norby  Pro User  says:

kimberkit: I just took a look at the EXIF data page and it looks like 1/2000 sec @ f/5.6 and ISO 400. Most P&S digicams should be able to take shots @ ISO 400, if a little noisy and f/5.6 should also be within the capabilities of most digicams as well. If you dropped to ISO 200, you'd still have a respectable 1/1000 sec shutter speed, which should still freeze it.

The advantages of the 20D in thie case are:

- low noise @ ISO 400
- heavier w/ lens+Battery Grip, so it sort of self-dampens motion
- the Image Stabilized lens may have helped, though there are several anti-shake/stabilizations P&S digicams out there now
- the single most helpful factor (aside from luck) is probably the burst capability. This is only one of 100 shots taken running up the hill. There is only one other that even remotely close to capturing this moment.

I think most digicams today are going to have a good chance of pulling off a shot like this. You may end up with more depth-of-field, but you will freeze the motion.

Really? Wow, thanks, Norby. Er, I hope you know I was teasing about hating you -- I just keep coming back to this photo and thinking "awww! so cute!" I'm not really sure what you mean by burst capability, but I'm also pretty sure my camera can't do it *wry* But argh! so cute.

Your defining moment in photography. This is so good I can't believe it. How the friggen hell did your finger choose to press the shutter at the quarter of a second. Beautiful,Beautiful,Beautiful! Will I ever have such a great moment?
Posted 52 months ago. ( permalink )

Norby  Pro User  says:

servilles: This was one of 100 pictures taken blindly while running up a hill in front of Pepper and N. This is also picture number 78,271 since I started keeping track of pictures taken (since our second or third digicam). Keep on snapping and something good is bound to happen. I doubt I'm going to have this much luck ever again, so I could quit now and be happy, or I could keep trying for the next many many years to out-do myself.

You know, if there are 100 shots, you could make a video from the photos. Dunno how many images per second that camera does but it'd certainly be a cool "making of" clip.

Totally mind blowing photo by the way :)
Posted 51 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

Norby  Pro User  says:

Mckirkus: It's somewhere around 5fps, IIRC, but a) I wasn't holding the shutter down the entire time, and b) it is gonna be hella jerky, so to speak, but the results might be interesting :)

Norby - um, yeah I think you could say that (about the 2nd place winner.) The sad thing (in my opinion) is that it was all set up, too... I think it would've been a cooler photo if he took it of someone else actually playing, like a street shot - rather than just a posed shot of himself. I read what he said, and I was like, whatever dude. ;)

I think your photo is much better, anyways. Besides the cute factor, and the difficulty factor, it's just amazing and full of life and joy and everything. :) Glad you were able to get some good stuff at Costco as a result. Your kids should really enjoy that playground equipment... I know when we've walked through and they've had it put up here, my kids beg me to buy it. ;) So happy for you.
