Lights over the lake

Lights over the lake

Due to the biggest amount of solar activity in seven years, the aurora has been pretty incredible this week, more than making up for the last two months of quiet.

If you've not seen the northern lights in person (and even if you have) you should check this amazing video shot by fellow Flickrite, Ole Christian Salomonsen using over 50,000 images and colour calibrated screens, this is the closest I've found on the 'net to the real thing. Breathtaking!

Railway

Railway

Taken the same morning as the Ben Nevis shot, I pushed the editing about as far as I could for that surreal look. With the assistance of the reflections and those crazy converging lines, it's nice to confuse the eye.

First day in for the new company for me today, an 11 hour shift to break me in gently, just going over the trucks in anticipation of the Winter Road so nothing new photographically, just raiding the archives once again. I hope you enjoy this one.

Hit "L" to play ;-)

Queenstown, NZ

Queenstown, NZ

100% cloud cover this evening blocking the northern lights so I've raided the archives again.

This is one of my favourites from my 2½ years in beautiful Queenstown, New Zealand.

Orientation for the winter road completed on Sunday and they hope to have it open on time around the end of the month. Still no 5D as yet but I'm tracking it in the post.

Lights over YK

Lights over YK

So on Wednesday there was a major solar event, Friday the effects hit our atmosphere, Saturday was blown out because of cloud cover and some fresh snow, but tonight was clear again.

This shot taken looking over Yellowknife, towards the city centre from Kam Lake.

This is now the fifth time I've been out specifically to shoot the aurora. It's getting a little better each time, hopefully by the end of the winter I'll have it dialed in.

In awe

In awe

There is something magical and captivating about the Northern Lights.

Always changing; even if I'm working or walking they have a magnetic appeal to pause me in my day (read dead of the darkest 19 hour long night) and just admire the work of Mother Nature at her brilliant painterly best.

Never did I consider I would be quite happy to walk 30 minutes at 1am to stand on a frozen lake in -30 and just admire the sky for an hour. Hopefully I might capture a little of their essence and beauty before the winter is through and we head south once more.
