Emma's CRRT (dialysis)Filter: Artificial kidney. Blood runs through tiny permeable straws, and the straws are surrounded with dialysate fluid. Depending on the concentration of various electrolytes in the dialysate, electrolytes and waste products, as well as water, cross from the blood to the dialysate by diffusion. Effluent bag. Effluent is a combination of used dialysate solution and all of the water, electrolytes, and water that the machine removed from the blood, so it's kind of like pee (and it's yellow!) Hot line: re-heats Emma's blood before giving it back to her. Dialysate fluid bag. Heparin: prevents clotting in the circuit. ![]() |
