Power Management, Cable Management

Power Management, Cable Management by unimatrixZxero.
I attached all my outlets to a wooden board along with my phone and DSL stuff and attached it to the wall with two screws.

I know it kinda looks messy, but you should have seen how it looked under my old desk. This is actually nicely managed.

I've posted an update here

@Luís I have a power meter on the main plug that goes from the board into the socket. I usually don't use more than 350 W/h when I'm using the PowerMac G5 with both monitors. And the rest of the usual stuff on.
The iBook, dsl-modem, router, and ext HDD on the Airport are allways on.

When I'm only on the MacBook+ext HDD, and the usual DSL/iBook stuff I use about 100W/h.

So there may be a bunch of plugs but I can't use all of the things at once.

Man, I'm kidding u. Looks pretty impressive. If u ask me, go for some velcro for the finishing of cables and you're home.

@Luís I actually did that. I've tied up a bunch of cables with velcro now it looks a lot neater.

Wow, excellent work. I may have to copy you soon. My strips are still on the floor, and now I see why it's always such a mess.

I see a lot of powerboards, but how many wall outlets are you running all of those from? While I appreciate that not all of these things can be on at the same time, personally I would be worried about overloading individual circuits.

Just curious as my main computer room (which also doubles as my wife's studio/teaching room) only has a single outlet which means a lot of powerboard swapping and no two things can be used at the same time (eg piano and computer).

@smperris I run that whole board from one wall socket. I just now turned all devices on that are connected and the power meter is giving me a reading of 270W when all devices are on and the three computers are more or less idle (0.2 to 0.3 load average).
I've started folding@home on all machines so they are all on 100% CPU usage, now the meter reads in at about 475W.

Considering a typical vacuum cleaner uses about 1300W that's still a very moderate load on that one socket.

The computers I'm using are a G4-800Mhz iBook, a Core2D MacBook 2GHz, and a dual G5 2Ghz with two 17" TFTs attached. I also have 2 external HDDs running along on an Airport Extreme base station. Other devices would be my DSL-modem, cordless phone base station, 3 powered USB-hubs, an 8 port Ethernet Switch, Logitech Z3 2.1 speakers and chargers for my camera, cellphone and bluetooth headset.

I only have about half this number of cables and assorted stuff but it still annoys me and I love the idea of getting it up off the floor - I keep rolling my chair into the stuff or stretching out my legs and pulling cables out etc. Just one question from a very non handywoman - how are the things attached to the board ? Also, being a bit on the Bree side, would it be possible/practicable to then put up some sort of backboard attached to the back legs of my desk so that I don't even have to see all this ? (My desk is more of a long table really with no sides, front or back)

The way the modem, DSL-splitter and phone base station are attached is by screws in the board. Basically the way you hang up a picture. Those three devices have little holes in the back exactly for this. The mulit-sockets are held on via cable ties. I drilled 4 holes into the wood for each socket 2 towards the top and 2 at the bottom. If you look at the full sized picture you'll see what I mean.

If you can't mount it on the back of your desk or on the wall behind your desk you could also attach it to the bottom of your desk.

i came to this picture from the link on unclutterer and i think this is a killer idea and will sort out all my wires like this. just one question, i noticed on unclutterer that you had a red chair which i think is from ikea, i was just wondering how confertable it actually is to do work and use the computet whilst on that chair?

@neerajpattni
Since the desk is also very low. I more or less fitted the height to the IKEA Pöang chair, I find it comfortable. The chair itself gives great lumbar support. I used to have back pains with my old desk with a standard chair, not anymore.

That is one neatly made design. The acid test, I guess, is to try to remove or add one extra cable... But it is really a clever concept. Congrats!
