Has hardly changed, add a few glass display
cases in place of the reading desks and bob's
you uncle! I love this room and would love to
get access to the upper level for a few
shots! One can dream!
Note to architects - as well as being
functionally efficient and easy to use, this
person makes an effort to visit and use
libraries which are beautiful spaces to be
in. If I ever get to Dublin, this will
definitely be on my list of places to visit!
Now that's what I call a library! Not one of
the horrible, antiseptic, characterless and
featureless places that seem to be trying to
put you off reading for life we see nowadays.
There once was a chap from Glenageary. Who worked on the Liverpool Ferry. But, in his spare time, Without reason or rhyme, walked tightrope in the Trinity Library.
To me this is what paradise looks like. I'd love to build a virtual 3D reconstruction
of this so people could visit it online and
walk around it, like I've done with 1920s
Berlin.
OH MY GOD! I have a facebook album I call 'Paradise',
full of pictures where you can lock me up for
the rest of my life and I wouldn't mind. Deserted islands, beautiful old castles, tiny
villages in the highlands... and the long
room! Thank you for that link! Paradise indeed.
I'm currently doing research on 'social
space' on a university campus where libraries
are being refurbished, and spankingly smart
new ones built - I think yours is wonderful
-why can't we have that, instead of blank
white and glass, brightness and tinny mp3
'beats' everywhere? Give me dust, lovely old
book smell, and the shuffle of papers anyday.

It's interesting how strongly people feel about what a library should be and what it should look like...
