Ick! Tick!

It's also a common hazard of mountain-biking this time of year, too in Missouri.

I hate those SOBs. I wandered off the paved trail at Two Rivers Park about a month back for a few minutes and wound up with six of them.

Remember: if you see any bullseye shaped spots around any of those tick bites, get thee to El Doctoro ASAP. My dad had Lyme Disease and it almost killed him.

@redjade...that's from a tick? I seriously think you should have someone professional take a look at this.

Hers is all healed, but I have one in nearly the same spot, but mine is a little too close to the nipple to be photographed. Otherwise, I totally would have.

Gads!!! I so do not miss those things! They would get bad where I grew up too (Minnesota). I cannot stand things that attach themselves to me and drink my blood!!!

Give me a bear anyday. At least I can hear them coming and they'll take me out fast if they really want to.

This one in the picture had not bitten yet, but I've never had a problem just pulling them off. Yes, occasionally, you can pull the body loose from the head, so you want to do it carefully. There are all kinds of "home remedies" for getting ticks to let go: kerosene, petroleum jelly, dishwashing liquid, a lit cigarette...the only one of those I've tried was the dish soap, and it didn't work!

They do make special tools for removing ticks--they look like plastic scissors with a scoop-shaped end for getting beneath the head.

TICKS ARE GROSS.

Ticks are gross, I second that! I had my share of experiences with Arkansas ticks a few months ago.

They are REALLY awful this year, I don't know why! And these spotted ones are the kind that give you the "fever." Bad deal.

I never got the bad symptoms, but Alex did. he was tested for Lyme and RMSF, but negative on both. Then we learned that there hasn't been a RMSF case reported in our state in the last decade or so. And also that STARI is much more common, as it's carried by the lonestar tick, as you see above. Fortunately, though STARI has the same early symptoms, and the same treatment, as Lyme (doxycycline), it isn't nearly as serious, nor has it such lasting repercussions.
