payday lender

payday lender by ninjapoodles.
This being a military community, these are EVERYWHERE. That's special, isn't it? Preying on soldiers. Arkansas recently had some very good legislation brought to make them abide by the same usury laws that every other lender must, but the lobbyists ensured that it died a quick death.

They are everywhere up here, too, and for the exact same reason - a large military population. It is usurious, isn't it? So wrong.

Oh, yeah. Victimizing the people who can least afford it, for profit. I don't know how they sleep at night. I really don't. Something like 370% interest in some of the cases that were examined here. And STILL we were unable to pass a law against it. They're looking for photos of these places at consumerist.com, so next time you're out, snap a few!

VA has some legislation coming up to ban these in the state, because they are so pervasive, and so damaging to the people who can least afford it. I hope it comes to the polls, I'd vote to abolish them. I think people get desperate for money and they don't understand that they can fall into that 370% interest trap you mention above. It's just criminal.

Don't hold your breath. We had beautiful legislation drawn up by the Speaker of our state house (LOVE HIM), and it was stunning to me that the other legislators could vote that down and not immediately be immolated in spontaneous sulphur-scented flames. The lobby for this industry is POWERFUL. I blame the Republicans. I know there are lily-livered Dems caving to the lobbyists, also, but still...well, you know.

Oh, and do your payday lenders seem to occupy the same spaces as the sellers of pre-paid cell phones? They do here, almost every time.

Where I live they're everywhere. They did pass a law against these monstrosities in Ohio last November, so some progress is being made. Any, I thought your photo was a good one to illustrate an article I wrote about the issue. Thanks!
