On November 30, 2006 super typhoon
Durian battered the central Philippines
with winds of up to 230kph and rainfall
of 466 millimetres in a day. Areas
greatly affected are the provinces of
Albay, Catanduanes, Camarines Sur and
Marinduque.
In Camarines Sur alone, it is estimated
that approximately 331,000 people have
been made homeless. In Albay, thousands
are missing and may never be found as
they have been swept away by mud flows
or buried under several feet of fast
compacting lahar. Reports are sketchy
out of Catanduanes. A week after the
typhoon on November 30, the province is
still without any communications link.
Anyone wanting to help can pledge a
donation through UNICEF. For those
abroad, please go to their website at www.unicef.org. For those in the Philippines, the
UNICEF hotline number is +632 758 1000.
