Ganges River, near Varanasi, India 2008
During the later months of the year, a mist descends over Northern India in the mornings and evenings, creating sunrises like this one that I can only describe as buttery smooth. This small piece of paradise lies only a short distance upstream from the amazing and ancient city of Varanasi. My memories of Varanasi are mixed. A place full of amazing history and culture, where the buildings tower over the mighty Ganges River, and the funeral ghats bear witness to the constant cycle of life and death. At the same time the air hangs heavy, often thick with smoke, and breathing is seldom pleasant.
For all the noise, energy, grandeur and squalour of Varanasi, this place, a small sand island only a few kilometres away, was for a short time a sanctuary of peace and tranquility in the second-most populous nation on earth.
