Waiting

Waiting by Unhindered by Talent.
Another from 5 May (24 hours of Flickr). I ended up playing with this for way too long. I liked the composition, but the lighting was quite flat, so I kept fiddling in hopes of making something happen. Eventually I settled on the GIMP's retinex filter, as it really helped pop the mid-ground boxcar on the left, which does much to balance the image.

Well, this is certainly not flat! Interesting effect. I've never tried this filter before. Nice work!

I like the way the metal things look so very metalic. Nice work!

Thanks to you both!

Lady: It does really emphasize the metallic feel of things, esp. the signal in the foreground. I hadn't thought of that explicitly, but in retrospect that's clearly part of why I liked this version.

Monkey: Well spotted - your memory of town's pretty excellent after all these years away. I'm on the 7th street crossing looking north into the flat distance. Yesterday we went to pick up another foster cat and crossed these tracks on a gravel road a mile or two north of town (so a mile or down down the tracks from this), and I had a cool idea for a wide panorama with the tracks and the wide prairie, but at the moment I'm supposed to be grading papers not racing around taking photographs. Maybe in a week or two...

Yeah, my mind is full of all sorts of stuff that never gets cleaned out, like the lay outs of towns I don't live in anymore!

Well, when you are done with grading papers (which should be done soon since graduation is the very weekend!) I hope you do take a crack at that panorma. It could be very cool.

My head is also full of tons of fluff, but town layouts tend to exit pretty quickly. I recognize things like that when I see them again, so I can often make it from point A to point B, but am completely unable to describe the route.

Thanks for the encouragement - I'll try that landscape shot when I'm done with all this stuff :-).

My first impression was that this was a modernist painting. Clean lines almost as if drafted. I know that it was with photos, but maybe a photo of a painting??

Then the close up and the realization that it was in fact a photo. Amazing. This is a work that I would easily hang in my office.

Thanks for the kind words. A framed copy will actually be on sale at a local art show in mid-July :-).
