A modern ghost town

I took this today as I waited around in a remarkably empty airport terminal on my way to Atlanta for GECCO. I also wrote about the experience.

Not HDR - it's using the (sometimes) nifty Retinex filter in the Gimp. I honestly don't know what that filter does, but there are certain (often flat-ish) photos that it can be very cool on. A couple of my favorite of my photos (Waiting and Turbine and abandoned cars (retinex)) use this effect, but I haven't used it all that often as it frequently doesn't really work.

I hadn't really thought about it looking like an HDR shot, but now that you mention it I totally see where you're coming from. I think it tends to exaggerate saturation in some weird ways, which is one of the features of a lot of HDR photography as well.
