Heavy traffic (from on high)

Heavy traffic (from on high) by Unhindered by Talent.
I love riding in the front top of double decker buses - I'm just a total kid that way. Here, through a heavily spotted bus window (accented the low early sun) we have morning rush hour on one of the strangest roundabout thingies I've ever seen in the UK. It's a big ovoid creature contain several (five?) mini-roundabouts at each place a road intersects the beast. We drove around parts of this lots when we were first here, and while I got better at it, I was never good (or comfortable) here. Crazy.

I miss the scenery, the tube, the sites, but not the driving.

I like the front, upstairs of double deck buses too (or the very back!)

Actually, a lot of this backup is probably because of the regular flow of pedestrians and cyclists across an outgoing branch to the right of this photo. This is the "standard" route from town out to the University (I come back this way on foot in the evening). The traffic's heavy enough that you usually need to push the little button to get a light at the crosswalk, and the resulting red light for the cars lasts long enough to back things up into the roundabout like this.

MRT: Yeah, I don't miss the driving either. Going without a car for a year is a really wonderful experience. It helps reinforce both how much I really don't like them, but also how it is possible (at least in some parts of the world) to survive without one.

TiaGD: Not the very back for me - makes me car sick. My bus in is almost always a double decker, and there's typically been nary a soul upstairs but me. The University term starts Real Soon Now, though, so I expect quite a few more passengers on this route, and probably competition for this choice seat :-).

We drove through it several times a day during our first two weeks here, and it was a killer, especially for an American who hadn't spend a lot of time with roundabouts in two years. I, too, prefer the bus or walking :-).

I didn't know Colchester had one of these!

There were always two I was afraid of. One had a big roundabout with six satellite mini-roundabouts. So you could drive the wrong way around the big roundabout! The other was the same but there was no big roundabout in the middle :-/

I think they were Swindon and Hemel Hempstead respectively..

PS I bet you don't get your choice of seat now! all the UEA buses in Norwich are packed!)

Actually, I'm still getting my favorite seat. I'm going in early enough, and get on the bus far enough out that there aren't a lot of university students on it yet. By the time we get to the U I definitely have company up top, but it's hardly crowded.
