Happy 2010 to the Flickr-verse! I'm sorry that I've been so non-participatory in the last several months.

I'd like to think that things might be better in the new year, but no promises. Our department has dropped from 5 faculty to 3, and not surprisingly this has cut into lots of things (like photography and Flickr).

Thanks again to everyone on Flickr; your support and feedback and incredible images is greatly appreciated. Best wishes for 2010 and beyond!

Elbow Lake, Minnesota, 7 August 2009

This is the last (for now) from my night in Elbow Lake in August. This is probably my favorite from the night, and one of my favorite photos in quite a while. It's just so "there".

The aliens have landed (and are somewhat confused)

Another from my night in Elbow Lake back in August. I ended up crossing the railroad tracks in the dark to get to a reasonable viewing location for the fireworks, and then ended up taking photos of the grain silos on my way back (e.g., this).

In an effort to get some more stable photos, I whipped out my little Gorillapod, but ended up struggling to find a reasonable footing in the steep gravel embankment along the tracks.

This, consequently, is a complete accident, but I really liked the off-kilter angle, and the color of the sky. That color is pretty much as it appeared in real life; the lights in town reflecting off the really low clouds led to this seriously weird glow.

Fire in the clouds

Back in August there was a street dance in Elbow Lake that a bunch of the Prairie Fire kids were going to, so I drove Tom there. After dropping him off at the dance, I took pictures of the fireworks, most of which were going off in the very low cloud cover. This led to some weird blurring effects - many of the bursts were only barely visible as more than a diffuse glow.

Silos in the dark

Back in August there was a street dance in Elbow Lake that a bunch of the Prairie Fire kids were going to, so I drove Tom there. After dropping him off at the dance, I took pictures of the fireworks (many of which were going off in the low cloud cover, which was weird), and then some night photos around Elbow Lake, including this shot of the grain elevators.

I'm not sure how I feel about the level of noise in the sky, but I don't have time to keep dorking with it at the moment.
