Seven Up, Ice and a Slice
Strobist Information:
This is a revisit of an earlier shot (Lemonade and Lime). In that shot, the Lemonade went flat really quickly. I wanted to try and capture the bubbles fizzing out of the glass, however when I redid the shot, I had exactly the same problem. I decided to try out an idea from mcollins123 who suggested putting salt in the drink. I didn't have any salt to hand but I tried a teaspoon of sugar instead. The effect was rather dramatic (and involved a lot of cleaning up afterwards). I got the dancing bubbles, but the whole drink turned to foam and didn't look so good.
The final shot is a composite of the two pictures. The bottom half of the glass is the still drink and the top half and the lemon is the fizzing drink. Hopefully the join is not too obvious! :)
I may give this one more go as I like the fizz in this shot, but I am not so happy with the way the glass is lit. Now I know how to make bubbles, I just need to bring everything together!
Setup was the same as before: Setup shot

The fizz is definitely nice. And you did get it lit correctly with the bits in the air.
There's a water line on the left side of the frame that just ends in fizz. Not sure if that's an artifact of the join or not but it's the only obvious join artifact I could see.
When you relight it, it would be nice to find a way to make the lemon translucent. Not sure how you're going to get a light small enough to go behind it, but that would look very nice if you can figure out how to do it. Now I'm starting to think about using a little pocket flashlight and gelling my flashes with CTO to match. Hmm....

@Tommy
You have got me thinking about lighting lemons now! :) Maybe if I cut it really thin it would look more translucent? I only have two SB-28's and I think a studio head would be a bit over powering on a half inch slice of fruit! :) Maybe some kind of light pipe might do the trick! :) I will have a sleep on this one and see what I come up with. Thanks for the great feedback, always appreciated!

Very impressive work. Look forward to seeing future experimentation and interested to know how you might light up your lemon slice.

A great picture :) I think you could try with a effervescent tablet - let's say an aspirin? :)

Thanks, that's a great idea. I will give it a try! :)

Nick this is really great. You truly inspired me on this one. I used a snoot (homemade from black foam core and electrical tape) to light my fruit. The advantage of the snoot is that you can use a long one and stretch the light spot further across the table (glass (etc.) I used 4 lights and still couldn't get a good ratio of fizz on top to bubbles in the glass. I've decided to move onto other experiments, but I sure learned a lot through this one. Thanks to you!
