I'm amazed no one has commented
but then again, maybe library personel
are too jaded from seeing this sort of thing
so often. Still, it''s an excellent shot.
Thanks for posting it

What percentage of these were damaged in the return process I wonder?

At the library where I work we avoid this kind of thing by assigning a staff member to come in at least once over a long holiday weekend to clear the bookdrop.

yikes! how, exactly, does that happen?

Our library's stack is about half that size after a three day weekend, though often a person does indeed come in to half the stack. We've rarely had problems with damage -- magazines sometimes can get ripped.

Holy shnikes! I think I would see that, walk away, and go home sick. And yes,,, what a waste since many of those materials were probably seriously damaged due to this serious back up at the book drop. I will never complain again when cleaning out our book drop. Maybe...

And this is why, at my library system, someone comes in once a day every day we are closed to empty the bookdrop! We have large free-standing drops outside, and if we don't empty them, patrons will think nothing of jamming things inside even when the drop is full and leaving their returns stacked on the top of the boxes! :-)
