Something rings a bell here...

Something rings a bell here... by Newism.
New Squarespace design struck us as familiar. When combining the header from our site with the content from the Campaign Monitor site, things tend to line up - a lot. What's the connection? Newism built the new Campaign Monitor site.

Here's a running list of similarities:

1. Darkened nav strip at the very top. Both same height. Both have same bevel.
2. Lens flare effect in header.
3. Position of logo and main navigation.
4. Sub nav background.
5. Sub nav icons.
6. 'Full Feature List' directly under the sub nav.
7. Freeform layout of the page content.
8. Footer promo from CM site www.campaignmonitor.com/uploads/images/promos/footer_cta-... is very similar to this one on the Squarespace site: www.squarespace.com/storage/optimizer/full-width-button-a...

It's certainly not as blatant as some of the panic.com / transmit icon rips we've probably all seen. I DO think the background and header of Newism has certainly served as an INSPIRATION for theirs... I'll leave it to Newism to decide just how MUCH inspiration :P

Yes, I would say that is very similar.

But nowadays it's very hard to be unique and of course all of these UI elements are very well known patterns.I think that your design can't be taken as the unique one.

On the other hand, looks very similar, so it's a quite weird as well ;)

By the way, of course Newism is one of the good design references on the internet

It's different enough not to be a blatant ripoff, but it's pretty obvious they had a good long (like, really long, dude) look at the Newism site :)

@e-man "it's not a blatant ripoff".
WTF? What would you define as blatant? Almost nothing on the squarespace site is original. It IS a blatant rip, and is an easy case to prove for copyright infringement.

stumpster, I don't think you could make a case for copyright infringement. But like e-man says, they must've had a really good, long look at the Newism site.

Ah, shucks. You caught me. I was just "paying homage!" Besides, look @ the colors. Yours are purple, and, well, mine are slightly darker. So there!

All kidding aside, I don't understand how people think that you can get away with this crud. It's one thing for a Nigerian Prince to do it, but man, a company that wants to sell its services online?

Bleh.

It could be worse—it could be this blatant abortion of a rip off of Campaign Monitor: webmasterchecks.com/

(Yeah, I know I'm late)

They're both trendy sites. That is, using the same trends as their starting points. Bokeh-style background, large header, all of that. Trendy. Lots o' dat in web design at the moment.

@lazyboyred: Nice try but you might not want to also name all your other accounts where you push WebmasterChecks the same "lazyboyred" — kinda gives you away.
