LIZZI BOUGATSOS
B: 1977
LW: New York City
Lizzi is an artist and a musician whose band Gang Gang Dance with Brian Degraw, Tim DeWit and Josh Diamond is also featured in the exhibition. Her solo art projects deal in sculpture, assemblage, writing, performance and collage, and often revolve around a theme of melancholic beauty. Materials come from the streets of New York or from travel with her band, and are used to circulate cultural symbols and to turn them on their head. For Lizzi Bougatsos' recent exhibition Street Feather the artist was initially inspired by a birdhouse she saw on Avenue B. Clearly made by a homeless person, Bougatsos was touched and inspired by the fact that a man without a home would make a home for birds. In that exhibition she re-created the birdhouse at human scale envisioning it as a surreal hearth.
The remixed street sign featured here (Funbags) and the found beauty salon portrait that she altered (Untitled, (Braces)) are extensions of this playfully critical world Lizzi creates. JF

JF

JIM DRAIN AND ARA PETERSON
B: 1975, 1973
LW: Miami, FL; Providence, RI
Jim and Ara met at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) at the end of the 20th century and did their first collaboration as part of Forcefield with Mat Brinkman and Leif Goldberg.
Years later, the two joined forces again to create a universe of conceptual abstraction titled Hypnogoogia. Twelve-foot geodesic sphere paintings rotated on the floor and from the ceiling; a huge handmade kaleidoscope created the illusion of an additional sphere, this one exploding with reflected video modulations; a twelve-foot rotating divan paved the way to their basement full of quietly spinning pinwheels, featured here.
These pinwheels capture one very important component of Jim and Ara’s work: that they are of very simple construction—foam core, paint, and electric fan—but as artworks achieve maximum visceral effect. KG

KG
