Just got this message from a friend...

Stolen pic?
Hi
I just recognized one of your pics on a site that apparently steals pics from flickr:
www.kataweb.it/multimedia/media/611567/2

I have a lot of cars pics so after hearing about this I took a look to make sure none of mine were there and I recognized yours because I remember faving it a few weeks ago.

Maybe you already know and are ok about it; I dont want to play flickr cop but if one of my pics was being used some where I'd realy like to hear about it.

I found out about it in this thread:

I see that you have the "Blog This" button enabled. Is that just for contacts, or for everyone? If you don't want to have your photos blogged anywhere, you may want to consider disabling that function.

Blogging still doesn't superceed copyright laws. And this isn't a fly by night...its the largest paper in Italy.

Yeah this sucks, but I have accepted that it is likely to happen. It is the nature of posting on a public forum. People suck, but fortunately not all of them. Like the guy that contacted you!

Yeah Alfie I have sent off the cease and desist letter along with an invoice this morning. Again, thanks for the heads up on this.

I give images to bloggers all the time, with the understanding that I am credited and there is a link back...the fact that they are claiming this as their own work is extremely infuriating...to say the least.

I've had the same happen to me - that was an italian setup too. So annoying. And to claim it as their own is totally outrageous!

so where can one tell them where to go?

This is really fucked up, plus what's really evil, with them stealing, and you linking the site it increases their clicks -> more revenue ... for them!

I'm glad you were able to get your photos removed from this site. Seems like they should invest in a camera and use a little of that time in getting their own photos.

But this is not a story and I am removing it from PWS.

Thieving bastards I agree with jimtown that they should get their own cameras and do their own leg work instead of sitting on their arses stealing other peoples work. I like Flickr but not if this is going to keep happening or even be allowed to happen.

Man, sorry to see your work stolen like that. It's very good!

As ugly as a watermark is, it's the only way to keep a photo from being used. Even with one, a good editor can clone it out. It's not just photos posted at Flickr that are stolen; we see many instances of pictures posted at plantfiles.com stolen and used for eBay auctions and other websites. The admins there are great about going to bat the for the copyright holders.

Thanks everyone. I used to use watermarks, but after seeing how eaily I could remove them from any of my images I moved away from it.

I guess it's just the nature of the business.

Duff I have made it so only my contacts can go large. Perhaps you should adopt the same policy.

Yeah watermarks are no deterrent for the skilled. The size thing sounds good though.

A London newspaper ran a story on the Guess Where London flickr group last year and illustrated it with photos stolen out the pool (no permission requested in advance). But eventually they paid up.

It does seem though that this Italian paper is definitely using flickr a a free image source. Good luck sorting it all out.

Chrisser  Pro User  says:

The group link provided by Randy Knox has been deleted due to Community Guidelines violations. The link doesn't work. And I agree with the watermark option, as thieves can have the option of cropping out watermarks that aren't in the middle of photos.
