The gold text and surrounds of the Byron book is brilliant. I like the note on the Night thoughts book. These days our thoughts at night time are only of what is happening on Flickr. :)

Quel honneur, Christine! Je vais mettre cette photo la avec plaisir!

Graham, thanks! That's funny. I do spend some night time, but even more time on the job, thinking about Flickr. Call me a slacker! But I think it's because photography, as well as interacting with interesting people like yourselves, interests me more than my day job.

Djotai, thanks for the great compliment!

Thanks Gia and Creative! I do own these books, they're a row of the ones I'm most proud of, but I haven't tried to read them yet Patri :)
What's funny is that those three books from the 1600's and the 1700's are better made than most books are today, so I probably could read them, the covers are real leather and they're put together very well with glue. A lot of the Victorian books like the blue one on the left would break if I flipped the pages too much!

Helen, I agree completely, there's nothing like curling up on the couch with a good book... even more fun is browsing through an antique bookstore, with shelf after shelf of older books sitting there dustily on the shelf and just waiting to be leaved through. I LOVE books, and I'm glad you do too!

I'm really excited next month to be going back to New York where I plan on spending an entire afternoon at the Strand Bookstore... their 3rd floor is all old books from as far back as the 1500's, and there are shelves of 17th and 18th century books there for the browsing. They're inexpensive too... the three in this picture cost me about $100 (55 pounds) all together!

Leviathor, well you've got me on incredible nature sightings. I saw an owl once in the wild, and that's about it :)

Thank you so much Peter! I love the stories that each book tells, even more when you open one and see the name of an old owner, or a dedication, or a note that it was given out as a school prize, or even a love letter!

Ian... Magical is a great way to describe them. Thanks my friend!

There was a fascinating article in the August issue of Antiques magazine about the evolution of bookbinding in the Victorian era. Some good examples here. Fortunately I have some poetry books from the same era. Love that fancy embossing and the gold on the covers. The soft colors, the feel in the hands. Mmmm nice!

Lovely books. You are fortunate.

Now I want that night thoughts book!!!

I've collected Victorian books for a while and have seen a decent number in various antique shops and book sales, but these are exceptionally lovely. Don't you just love old books? I should try photographing some of mine.
