The failure to read good books both enfeebles the vision and strengthens our most fatal tendency-- the belief that the here and now is all there is.

Thanks for the link. I read the NY Times online but don't tell anybody.
The failure to read good books both enfeebles the vision and strengthens our most fatal tendency-- the belief that the here and now is all there is. by Nerboo.
Early this year, I discovered an article in the NY Times regarding the best novels written in the past 25 years.

www.nytimes.com/2006/05/21/books/fiction-25-years.html?_r...

So this year I have been plowing through the extensive list with the goal in mind that I will have read all of the listed books by the end of the year. However, with three months to go I still have ten books to go, and I'm reading other books as well in addition to those on the list.

Never enough time.

Never enough time indeed! I picked up 4 books the other day that I felt I owed it to myself to read properly: 'Catch 22' and 'Slaughterhouse 5' (both of which I read as a young teen, and probably went straight over my head!), and 'The Old Man & The Sea' and 'The Sound and the Fury' - neither of which I've read!

There's always an undisputed 'classic' out there waiting to be picked up!

Does "The Complete Far Side" by Gary Larson count as a good book?

I just bookmarked that page.

Since nap time ended and I started working every day (only till 3, but still) I have stopped reading and this bums me out sooo much because I love to read. I need to make time to do it. Thanks for the reminder.

What's your all-time favorite book? Do you ever re-read books you love?

Ah, The Sound & the Fury! My favorite book!
To me it would!
I've read White Noise and Falling Man, and hated both of them. However, I'm reading Underworld (along with five other books) and I think it's beautifully written.
Thanks! I need it!
There's always time, even if you just read 15-20 minutes a day.
Mine take up entire shelves!
The Sound and the Fury and Ulysses. And yes, I reread books all the time.

yeah, I had some reservations about that list (but I do plan to start working on some Updike)...

A few questionable selections:
Beloved? Read this twice and am reading it again for my AP class. Not a huge fan.
White Noise? I really hated this book.
Mating by Norman Rush...never heard of it...

Also...isn't it wierd that Toni Morrison and Marilynne Robinson are the only women on the list?!

Thanks. Yeah, you have to be dedicated to read at times!
Blood Meridian and the Border trilogy are on the list. I've read all of them! The Road....best book I read last year!
Beloved is utter shite! Out of all the books I've read so far off of the list, it's the one I hated the most. Over hyped, over sentimental crap. White Noise wasn't much better.
I finished Housekeeping earlier this week, and behind Richard Ford, it's the best thing I've read all year. Robinson's insight into family dynamics are unparalleled.

Good for you, that is quite a goal but one that will make a difference.

Mating was a good book, and I just finished "the Art of Racing in the Rain", if you get a chance and are either a dog lover or any interest in race cars, it is a philosophically fascinating book written from the point of the dog who grieves for not getting poseable thumbs.

I am rubbish at reading books.....really I am......I struggle.

sometimes I resort to audiobooks to curb my frustration but it isn't the same.....one goal I have for post365 life is to make more time for books......this inspires me.

Personally I'm working on the 100 greatest of all time list. And it is difficult to find the time every day. But I really miss it when I don't read SOMETHING. Oh and there are others I read too. Off the list. :) Your SPs are definitely thought provoking...

I know what u mean, never enuf time, have to cook dinner b4 Louisa kills me, lol, trying to get caught up, other things to do tonight and reading not even on the list, finding things and photo shoot is, :))
This is a gr8 shot though and I do agree with the quote: I have objected to many of Louisa's friends cuz they are not "academic" or "preppy" as she calls it and I'm glad if they read Harry Potter cuz that for them is literature! Seriously, I do not think any except the latest new bff, whom I adore, because she is smart, would ever even consider joining a book club or discussing literature. And I abhor that tendency because to most of them Beowulf is either a movie or an English project, and I remind Louisa she has loved that poem, in the orignal, for many years now. Then I remind myself she's a teenager and wanting to be popular or fit in is normal.

Somehow, this prompts me to wonder. What if Katie Couric had asked Sarah Palin about -- not just magazines and newspapers -- but books. "Governor, what books have you read lately?" I spose using that as a followup would've been interpreted as piling on, or running up the score.

Thanks for the link. I like to see what other people are reading. I may have a touch of "the grass is always greener" syndrome, but I've found a lot of great books this way. Last year our local library closed down for a remodel, and the staff were encouraging patrons to check out lots of books so they'd have less to move. I made the mistake of picking several really bad books based on the covers and the inside flap. Some of them were worthy of burning they were so bad. I learned a lesson from that, so I appreciate you sharing.
