I wonder how you get out if there's a fire and there's a rush to the exits.

"Fire" Good job there's no kitchen.

I know you meant electrical fire, but there's never been a more reliable machine ;)

I doubt that the staircase is the only entrance. That'd be just absurd.

Open staircases are messy. The grit from everyone's shoes will be raining down underneath of it. The glass will get scratched quickly. Also, women in skirts will never want to use this.

Handicapped access? I'm guessing they have elevators elsewhere.

The glass in the stairs looks to be frosted, it should probably hold up to scratching more (though I imagine will get plenty dirty), and not be as much of an issue regarding the "voyeur angle"...

You can't really see it very well - but there is an elevator in the middle of the staircase! (for handicapped access). And i imagine that some of the store pictures will show 'exit' signs, i haven't looked at them yet... (Otherwise it wouldn't be allowed to open..)

They've used the glass stairs at the SOHO Apple store in NYC for years, so I'm sure they know how they will wear and how to clean them.

There is an elevator in the middle. I suspect that there is another exit and entrance for deliveries hidden somewhere. Trust that the city bylaws and building codes have been respected. The success of the design is that you see an illusion, not the pratical things like washrooms, storage spaces and exits. Enjoy the illusion of space.

You are right "be OH be" about skirted ladies hesitating to use the transparent steps. I would not like that. I would have to be sure to wear pants that day or that no one is below. The design is wonderful though.

I have been reading the comments many comments i agree many i wonder who writes it without giving second thought.

Mimosa, you dont have to ware pants you can wear skirts as you skipped that the staircase are not transperant but shabby thick glass so there is no invasion of your privecy.

2) This is a part of atrium and not the main staircase. even if this entire structure collaps there is always a fire escape and rest of the staircase. Fire dept in any part of world does not allow glass staircase for escape.

The serious problem with this particular part could be when actual fire breaks out. This part of atrium could work as chimni feeding oxigen from down below and allowing smoke to rise up.

I'm a Fire Fighting System Designer and if i look at the layman point of view, this building is owesum beyond a common man imagination. As an architect, there might have many issues. As a Fire Fighting System designer, I dont think a company like apple has skipped such IMP issue and must be having a solid solution. These are the snaps which we call mack up and not the heart of the building.

Personally i liked the building would have been happy to see the Fire Pump Room and rest part of the building. (little narshus ha.!!)
