Save this house!

    Newer Older

This cob house was built by a guy named Ian Marcuse (he headed up the Stanley Park cob project) in the backyard of the house he rents on Salsbury Drive in Vancouver. Unfortunately there's a good chance the house and the fantastic garden surrounding it will be torn down to make way for duplexes.

They're fighting to have the cob house and the property it's on preserved from housing development and are aiming to turn it into a park or something along those lines. Apparently the city may be interested in buying the property. They've been holding parties and open houses to raise awareness among people in the neighbourhood. So if you're in the 'hood check out the cob house and sign the petition to preserve this amazing structure and surrounding lot.

You can find it at 1117 Salsbury Drive, Vancouver, just a couple east of commercial drive.

I came to know abt cob houses in your photostream and i must say i took a liking to them immediately!
It would be sad if it has to be torn down to make way for "development".

what a cute, romantic and completely original house! to think, big ugly concrete pre-fab buildings made of crappy low-grade materials may replace this authentic home-made paradise... what is wrong with the world?

i hope it will be preserved, please keep us updated!

lil aNNA - Thanks, I don't know. What they need really are commitments of money from the government or grants from companies to help get things going and of course support from the community.

It would be tragic indeed to lose this building. A stellar chance for City Hall to fight on the right side for once.

Update: Unfortunately, after a long battle the developers won their case and this building was knocked down to make for a condo development.
