Did you know hamburgers come from plants? Think about it. Buns are made with flour from wheat, which is a plant. Even cheese, made with milk, is from a cow who eats, you guessed it, plants like alfalfa and grass. The Junior Master Gardeners talked about how our food system depends on plants and then got creative. Here are five illustrations. Top left: A nicely labeled diagram of a plant with Brussels-sprout-like leaves. Top right: A different concept, with a more extensive spaghetti-like root system. Bottom left: The young man who drew this said each ingredient was coming out of the ground. For instance, tomatoes are being sliced by underground blades on the left-hand side of the picture. Do you see the ketchup squirting out at the top? Bottom right: I squeezed in two for the price of one--above, you see the most creative plant illustration, one that plays on the cow concept; below, this plant picture features a "cut-away view" of a tiny burger forming inside a flower. The kids' artwork blew me away!
