Remains of Cavendish House, Abbey Park, LeicesterAll that's left of Cavendish House, built in 1600 (possibly from the stones of Leicester Abbey) and burnt down in 1645, not, as some will tell you, by Cromwell's army but by Charles I soldiers after he left it following the siege of Leicester. I;m sure they had a really good reason. It was built by the first Earl of Devonshire, son of Bess of Hardwick. The Earls became Dukes and the Devonshires are still with us to-day, in charge of Chatsworth and various other things that very, very posh people do, like horse racing and running Sotheby's. Uploaded on Jan 6, 2010 Swithland Reservoir Water Works, LeicestershireWhile most people are distracted by the view directly behind where I took this photograph (and who can blame them) I was more interested in the views (better in the winter with less foliage about) of the former waterworks at Swithland Reservoir. The gazebo seen here covered the central air vent and around it were six filter beds. Built to clean the water from the reservoir for the city of Leicester in 1896. Listed Grade II in 1984. An amazingly over the top Victorian solution.
