Shining City on the Sea

Shining City on the Sea by Edna Barney.
The USS Ronald Reagan is a monument to the ingenuity of shipbuilders from the Phoenicians, to the Vikings, to the Americans, and to Ronald Reagan's dream of a shining city on a hill.

On Wednesday, 4 January 2006, the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier Ronald Reagan departed from the Naval Air Station North Island at Coronado, California on its maiden deployment. According to NBC News San Diego, the majority of the sailors on board have never deployed and, in fact, it will be the executive officer’s first deployment as a commanding officer.

The oil painting of the USS Ronald Reagan is on display at the Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, California, where President Reagan is buried. This ship is a magnificent tribute to a great leader and defender of freedom for mankind. The aircraft portrayed seem to be the Navy's FA-18 Hornet.

Blogged May 2005, at Neddy's World. Since then, this "picture of a picture" has reached 400 views on Flickr, proving something or other about my photography. As of December 2006, there are over 1000 views of this photograph. Today, 4 April 2007, I see that the Ronald Reagan is #475 in Explore and has almost 2000 views. As of 28 February 2008, this picture of a painting has reached more than 5500 views at Flickr. Go figure.

As of September 2008, we are counting down to the 10,000 mark, which will be quite an achieivement for a photograph on Flickr that has NO nudity.

but almost no comments?
who will try to explain that?
they do adore their weapons,
but secretly?

Yes, Dietmar, it is very interesting that there are no comments about this incredible creation of man. Some may think of these ships as war machines. I think of them as peace-makers. They are so huge and awesome, like the battleships of yore, just anchoring one of these beasts offshore of a troublesome nation, is usually enough to kindle instant fright.

Ships such as these are America's most powerful and influential ambassadors.

During the American Revolution, the rebels had no Navy and they soon realized how dangerous that situation was when the British sailed their entire fleet up the Hudson River to West Point. The rebels learned well from the British, and now those once ragtag Americans have long overtaken Britain with the world's most powerful navy.

God save the President; God save the Queen; and God save the rest of the Free World. Amen.

I would call it a picture of a painting. Nice painting.
I don't believe war ships are peace-makers.

Thanks ezaricos. You are right about it being "a picture of a painting." However, American warships can certainly be "peacemakers". Just anchor one of these floating airfields or a battleship such as the USS Missouri off the coast of any troublesome country and watch peace reign, with nary a shot fired in anger.

Could be, but many times what this ends up triggering is more hate between nations, specially towards powerful ones like USA.

The power of the United States of America derives from the consent of her people, 300 million strong and counting. Those citizens do not wield power in order to foment hatred between nations. They wield power in order to protect the foundations of freedom for themselves, their posterity and the free world.

Such a wonderful picture to give tribute to a great man! I too believe these battleships are peacemakers. Peace through victory. We have to show our strength, other wise we look weak. Weakness can lead to defeat. I have nothing but respect and admiration for Ronald Reagan!! When he said something, he meant it! For example: Mr. Gorbachov, TEAR DOWN THIS WALL!!!! He brought about change for the better. I miss his strength, his intergrity, and his love for this great country. He was a true american, a true hero. And i was and still am proud to call him Ronald Reagan, President of the United Sataes of America.

He believed in all of us. The strenth of the human spirit that is in all of us today. How great we can all become if we just do it, the possibilities are endless. And most of all he believed in this country and the example we could be to others. To spread freedom throughout the world, which is our God given right and desire to be free from oppression and tyranny.

When a modern American air craft carrier was brought to the tsunami disaster, people were angry that America would send the ultimate war machine to the area! They protested and one of the officers quickly shut them up by explaining that it has a fully equipped hospital with the latest state of art medical equipment and hundreds of beds. It has a power plant that can create enough fresh water to supply a city. It could also generate all of the electrical needs of a city. It had enough food to provide the needs of all the victims and the emergency workers on the scene. It was the largest and most important instrument of peace America could provide at that time, and that's what it was there.

I love America! I am so glad I live here now. So many people want America's help when they are in trouble and then they complain later. It is awful how ungrateful the world is for all that America has done for them.

And Ronald Reagan was so great. Many of my friends and family greatly admired him.
