Pocahontas in the Woods
![]() Jamestown Island, Virginia
Pocahontas(circa 1595–1617) was a young Indian princess who is said to have prevented the execution of Captain John Smith by her people, the Powhatans. Historians recorded her as the favorite daughter of Emperor Powhatan. She befriended the English colonists at Jamestown and became a Christian. After her marriage to one of the colonists, John Rolfe, she became Rebecca Rolfe and travelled to England where she was royally entertained. She died in England, leaving a young son.
