xenmate: That would be laser-spill from the trigger. Someone find me an interference filter for that exact wavelength and then we wouldn't have to worry about it :cP

Hah, super shot. Can just see the pellet exiting right.
You should try higher calibre weapons for effect.

I have a 0.22 at my parent's house that I can probably get away with using in my garage with an adequate bullet trap. I don't know if I should be shooting anything bigger than that in there (totally ignorant when it comes to weapons), but theres always a random hayfield come spring :c)

rickpawl  Pro User  says:

LOL, check local ordinances regarding discharging of firearms with in city limits, if you are. Also, the muzzle velocity of a .22 far exceeds that of a pellet gun and the unimpeded round can travel up to a mile, so even in a hay field be careful. But of course, I'm sure you know all this. : )

Apparently its illegal to be firing a pellet gun within the city limits as well.... That's just stupid.

I keep looking at this one over and over again. It is crazy cool.

Are you using a laser trigger for this work? I imagine you have to deal with a delay of some kind? And getting the pellet to pass through the laser must be challenging.

Also, you need to shoot pellets through more stuff so I can live vicariously in your world.

Yeah Jasper. The image is too centered. And you could use something in the foreground to frame the subject, like a tree branch. And how about something in the background, maybe some ferns or a flock of seagulls or something. Maybe an American Flag. Oh, and always remember the rule of thirds for better composition. Oy...

nebarnix, idealys could have phrased his "advice" better but i think i know what he means. the concept is brilliant and so is the capture - - very hard to do. have you considered how you might try and hide the extras in these fotos? i imagine it would be a bitch and quite time-consuming. i personally spend hours on end trying to make my set-ups perfect and i usually devote one day to the layout and another to the shoot itself. i should start posting my professional work on flickr instead of my collecting insanity! it's the copyright issue that concerns me.

General Cornwallis says:

It's interesting to see the lag in the electronics there. That was triggered when the pellet broke the laser beam. As the pellet was probably fired at 600fps then since the pellet is about an inch past the beam we can work out approximately the delay in the electronics to be 7200/1 or 0.0001389 seconds.

nebarnix  Pro User  says:

Yeah that sounds about right. It had the CPU running at 1MHz and the ADC was sampling 64 clocks. But it was updated with the actual firearms to 8MHz and 16 clocks so the response is much faster now, probably around 6uS
Posted 12 months ago. ( permalink )

view profile

General Cornwallis says:

Just a thought BUT... If you put the laser by the end of the muzzle and then introduced sufficient delay that you could photograph the pellet in mid air then you could shoot eggs etc without the laser beam being visible in the frame.

A further thought - if you hot-glued the egg to some solid wire or a small tube, you could have the tube hidden from view of the camera. The egg could be exploding in mid air with the pellet not even visible!
