Futility

Futility by Miss Aniela.
For Rossina Bossio. I've wanted to mention Rossina for a while, particularly with this picture which I did a while ago, and now seems the appropriate time to do so, as Rossina is leaving Flickr. I recommend anyone who has not seen Rossina's photographs or paintings to visit her website, or her Flickr stream, with Safe Search off, of course - as her reasons, as spelt out here, are strong words against what alot of us feel about this site, that I would like to flag up.

Edit: I certainly don't want to discourage Rossina from changing her mind and sticking on Flickr! ...but even if she does, unfair moderation remains as much of an issue.
----
This image and its title describe, for me, the worst feeling about life - of how one chooses to spend their time which rapidly speeds along, and with what purpose... the recent Susan Boyle phenomenon encapsulates, for me, how gender practices play their role within that lifetime feeling of futility, aided by articles like these.

so far no one commented on what you actually said here!!!!!
I am amazed!!!!!!
anyway...

I HAVE read what you wrote here
and i HAVE seen what Rossina wrote too
I must say it made me immensely sad to see that happen but I understand her completely. She for one was a huge inspiration and I consider her to be one of those people that raise the bar a bit higher with every single upload. But to consider her content as unsuitable is ludicrous!!!! I can't help but think about all those creepsters that have far more unsuitable content (and that is putting it mildly) on their streams that are wide open (pardon the pun) for public. And yet they are not deleted not warned (probably) about their misconduct.

In the past few days I have seen many people announce taking a break/rest or leaving Flickr altogether and it is starting to make me feel somethign not so good is happening to this site. What is going on with Flickr is what I want to know?

Miss A, I agree with the comments above; it's a very compelling image that projects a strong sense of expression that does imply futility. I'm a bit perplexed at the reference to the Susan Boyle article. Is it that the media's shallow reaction to S.B. is the exemplar of what's wrong with the cultural view of women in art?

(Ok, pls excuse if I've just stated the obvious...)

Miss Aniela  Pro User  says:

@ jl-lb - hi again :) there's alot to say about the S.B. construction in general. I referenced it here within the context of futility, because of the hypocritical way society laughs (or is encouraged to laugh) at her lack of adherence to norms and practices... those practices (including, but not just, femininity) ironically are futile as they seem designed to feed self-hatred and dissatisfaction anyway...

@ Cencula - yes, it's enough of a shock to see certain of our flickr friends moderated, Rossina's moderation is particularly bewildering...

@ achuka - oh i would ask rossina to stay, but i know she has spent alot of time debating this with herself, so in this particular context i accept and respect her stance... however, she won't be closing down her account completely which is good. Of course, i'm also happy if rossina changes her mind and continues to use flickr ! :)

I have mixed feelings about the article you linked to. While I can understand the frustration over the medias portrayal of the ideal image, we can not blame it all on the media. Afterall, it's human nature to be attracted to beautiful things and long before TV was invented, the pretty girl would always get the guy. Sure the enlightened mind should be able to see beyond the T&A but my experience has shown the enlightened mind to be a rarity. So for the author of that article, (Liz Jones) to go off on "Britain's Got Talent" judge Amanda Holden, by calling her "a woman with no talent at all other than to possess worryingly brown, spherical breasts and a curiously waxen face" says very little for Liz. If she's frustrated by the "ideal body image", she should at least not take it out on those who supposedly have that image. Afterall, it's not their fault anymore than it's not Susan Boyle's fault for not having it.

I actually wrote a letter of complaint to 'Grazia' magazine last month (supposedly a 'thinking womans 'glossy).. which published an article making Susan into a paper dress-up doll - so their readers could dress her up in something decent, as opposed to her current frumpy wardrobe.! It utterly disgusts me, grrrrrh!!

I don't think the Daily Mail article was particularly profound, by the way. The "Femail" section of that awful paper is riddled with contradictions. On one page there will be an article about a woman surviving against the odds, and on the next will be one about the latest diet.

@ arty & brill girl

I agree that tabloids like that paper are riddled with contradictions, and I would never really applaud anything from those papers as particularly feminist or groundbreaking. Neither do I completely love the article to which I linked - hardly Naomi wolf material, it's got that bitchy tone necessary to make it entertaining enough for a tabloid, and when I first read it I thought it just went too far with the stereotypes it draws, and the general vitriol towards various people.

Beneath all that though, I like how it takes a moment out from life to analyse a kind of irony around the S. Boyle story, not just in terms of futile feminine practices but also with everything else about life that seems so boring and repetitive... buying food and cooking food and giving birth to 'ungrateful kids'.. yes a very exaggerated and Larkin-esque negativity towards life, but precisely how alot of us feel because we might no have other big problems in life, so the trivial things become more of a burden. I've had that feeling many times in life (which I'm not proud of - and only when something nasty or potentially nasty happens, do I/we get snapped out of it, to discover a new appreciation for just life itself).

@ brill girl - i think Liz was referring to Holden's botox and possible implants (ie. 'worryingly spherical' breasts)... hence the idea of Holden conforming to the ideal body image by getting surgery rather than having those looks naturally. Not that I think Holden should be held responsible for ideals of body image, but for me, as a symbol of those pressures, she fits well into the whole irony painted by Liz's article.

Editing and media representation aside (the way Holden enters stage like a svelte blow-up doll standing between Cowell and Morgan and always has her appearance referred to within the first few seconds of the show - elements that aren't necessarily her fault) I personally detest the way Holden stereotypes herself on that show with comments like 'I think I might climax this evening!' or 'I'd love to get up and kiss you but I might burst out of this dress'... that's as well as the fact that I consider both her and Piers Morgan absolute shit-talking plebs.

I removed the word 'profound' from my description though, to seem less misleadingly emotive about the article.

Natalie...thank you for bringing the Flickr issue involving the censorship of Rossina Bossio to my attention. Prior to your statement I had never ran accross this very talented artist before. Her art (both photographic and painting) is abosultely fantastic and hardly warrants to be moderated by the Flickr censorship police. Though I have a hard time getting my head wrapped around the concept of censoring art, I have even a harder time getting my thoughts around Flickr's logic on this one. Thanks again for the heads-up, Natalie.

I admit to never having seen the show so I have no idea as to what kind of character Holden portrays herself as, but if she's is as you described her, then I would tend to agree she is also guilty of portraying a superficial image by virtue of being that superficial image. It sounds like her motives are to provide men with the fantasy they want. Of course, the same could be said for me and my work. Afterall, it is my job to provide men with their fantasy. I just hope I'm smart enough to know when it's for work and when it's not. Actually, I know I'm smart enough. What I should ask myself is, am I smart enough to not let it affect my view of all men. So far, that's a tough question for me.

By the way, and I should have mentioned this before, it'll be an absolute shame if Rossina Bossio leaves flickr. Flickr deserves to lose one of it's stars though, especially after the patronizing attitude flickr gave her about setting filters. I fear though, that flickr has seen the money to be made from porn as there seems to be a greater proliferation of it. None the less, flickr should spend less time harassing the artists, and more time screening the perverts and pedophiles.

Love your photo also. :-)

brilliant girl wrote: "It sounds like her motives are to provide men with the fantasy they want. Of course, the same could be said for me and my work."
That touches on some issues I'd really like to discuss with Natalie face to face, as I find the "reality" and the "persona" of people fascinating. One generally has to adopt a persona of sorts to achieve success. If I remember correctly, Amanda Holden has three A-grade A levels and I think she studied drama at Cambridge Uni. She is clearly not stupid. Indeed she used to be quite cool and was popular among "alternative" comedians. However, she long ago adopted the role of acid-tongued bimbette (lips and tits on legs, basically) in order to achieve some sort of fame/success, perhaps because she couldn't get taken seriously as an actor what with her natural looks. Unfortunately, I think she became so good at pretending to be a bimbo, that she actually became one!
Her story is just as sad an indictment, in its own way, of the way Susan Boyle is being treated by the media. Women - more than men - have always been forced into fitting one extreme stereotype: the Madonna/whore phenomenon. Women aren't "allowed" to blur boundaries, which is something that affects Natalie (facing the "contradiction" of being the photographer and the model and creating work that can be seen as both art and soft porn) and Rossina (likewise but with the added problem of working with canvas and pixels, as if a woman is incapable of doing both brilliantly!)
You rarely hear the phrase "RenaissanceWoman", unfortunately do you?

[I wrote more here about the believing the press and being coerced into who the tabloids/public want you to be, with reference to Rosie Hardy and Miss Aniela, but I've droned on long enough already and these words will likely prove to be futile!]

I absolutely adore this photo - you looking very natural and and making use of your amazing beauty and the beauty of this light and the wonderful contrasting colours!
Now, I think that there are many people out there who appreciate Susan Boyle's incredible talent and gift for performing without paying much attention to her appearance - and whose appearance it is similar/dissimilar to etc etc. I think we are all guilty of noticing an apparent difference which only means that we are making the same considerations as those with these predjudices. The issue is her talent not her looks...and the two are not linked!

This may seem naive as I agree with brill girl that it is human nature to be attracted to beautiful things. We can however, all use our experience and wisdom to realise the flimsy nature of these values and have more sense to make a more rounded opinion

We need to look above these predjudices and we need to lok above this article - it's only mainstream and it's only one opinion and it is not the enlightened who write it!
